Children and teenagers
A first check around age 7 can spot a jaw growth problem (narrow jaw, mismatch between upper and lower). Some issues are easier to correct while the child is still growing.
Conventional treatment with braces usually starts between 11 and 14, once the adult teeth are through.
Adults
Crowded teeth, a gap that has opened, a tooth that has drifted after an extraction: adult orthodontics is common. It is sometimes also used to prepare for an implant or a crown.
Clear aligners (removable trays changed every one to two weeks) are very discreet. They suit many cases, provided they are worn about 22 hours a day.
Process and duration
The assessment includes an examination, photos, impressions or a scan, and X-rays. I then present the possible options and how long each takes.
Treatment usually lasts 12 to 24 months, with a check-up every 4 to 8 weeks. At the end, a retainer (a wire bonded behind the teeth or a night-time tray) stops the teeth moving back.
Frequently asked questions
Are aligners as effective as braces?
For many cases, yes, provided they are worn properly. Some complex movements are still more predictable with fixed braces. The assessment helps choose.
Do braces hurt?
Some discomfort and tenderness are normal for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment. It passes quickly.
Why wear a retainer?
Teeth tend to move back towards their original position. A retainer protects the result long term.
